The John Madden Company Team

John Madden, Founder, John Madden Company Commercial Real Estate Development

John W. Madden, Jr.

Founder

John Madden Company founder John W. Madden, Jr. is a pioneer of commercial development in the Denver area. For over 45 years, his vision and use of distinctive building materials have produced spaces that enhance the surrounding communities, and perform well for investors and tenants alike.

Madden got his start in the building industry in Omaha in the 1960s. Upon moving to Colorado in 1970, Madden purchased land near Orchard Road and Quebec Street which would become Greenwood Plaza. Madden saw the potential in the fields in this area for a beautiful business park. Under his leadership, the John Madden Company developed more than 660 acres of land to turn Greenwood Village into a nationally acclaimed area in which to work, live and play. The company’s award-winning developments include Palazzo Verdi, The Commons, Harlequin Plaza and Fiddler’s Green Amphitheater. In 2010, Madden’s instrumental role in the development of the community was recognized when Greenwood Village proclaimed June 21, 2010 John Madden Day.

Madden differentiated himself from other developers early on by focusing on the longevity of the company’s properties and their impact on the surrounding community. He was an early adopter of LEED building practices (all John Madden Company’s current properties are LEED Certified), and he was heavily involved in the selection of high-end building materials that would add to both the endurance and the aesthetics of the building. This focus on quality construction and classic style helps John Madden Company buildings remain an asset to communities in which they reside.

In addition to innovative architecture and quality building materials, John Madden Company properties are instantly recognizable for their use of outdoor art – a direct result of John Madden’s own passion for supporting the arts. Madden's belief that art should be part of everyday life led him to found the Museum of Outdoor Arts, a unique private collection of artworks from around the world. To further encourage business leaders to lend their expertise and support to the arts, John Madden founded the Colorado Business Council for the Arts. He is a recipient of the Colorado Governor's Award for Leadership in the Arts and is past Chairman of the Board of the National Business Committee for the Arts. He also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Denver Area Council Boy Scouts of America.

Today, Madden remains involved heavily in the community and in all the operations of the John Madden Company. The John Madden Company remains committed to John’s vision for the long-term care and prosperity of the properties it develops and manages.

J Madden, John Madden Company Commercial Real Estate Co-Chairman

J. Madden

Co-Chairman

J. Madden got his start in the family business in 1972. Together with his father and John Madden Company founder John Madden Jr., J. played an integral role in the development of award-winning commercial real estate properties with the John Madden Company, including Palazzo Verdi, Tuscany Plaza, 150 West Jefferson, and Greenwood Athletic Club.

J.’s detail-oriented approach to project management enabled him to successfully guide projects from concept to completion. While J. was involved in the entire project development process, he played a particularly important role in contractor management and architecture on the John Madden Company’s development projects.

The John Madden Company has always been about creating exceptional spaces that enhance the surrounding community. In the mid-‘80s, J. expanded that focus to include the fitness industry with the Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club. That facility, which J. founded, has since achieved national recognition as a model for suburban fitness, swim, and tennis clubs.

J. followed up the success of that project with Pura Vida Fitness & Spa in 2007. Located in Denver’s Cherry Creek North shopping district, Pura Vida’s holistic approach to club membership has captured national attention for its modern design, innovative fitness and nutrition programming, as well as customer service that draws from the best of the hospitality industry. With a club culture that focuses on inclusiveness, members are engaged not only in physical fitness, but also in nutrition, overall well-being, and in building a social community of like-minded people.

J. is a former member of the Young Presidents’ Organization. He lives in Denver with his wife, Linda, and their twins, Grace and Joseph.
